Their Highnesses the Duke and Duchess, along with their sons the Hereditary Prince and Duke Michael have recently concluded a visit to Mecklenburg to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the raising of the Mecklenburg duchy’s to grand ducal status by the Congress of Vienna. The Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin achieved this status first on 14 June 1815 followed by Mecklenburg-Strelitz on 28 June.
The Hereditary Prince and Duke Michael arrived in Mecklenburg on Thursday 11th June ahead of the Duke and Duchess’s arrival on Sunday 14th June.
On Monday 15th June the family visited the Mecklenburg-Strelitz Cultural Quarter in Neustrelitz where they handed over two items from their private collection to be put on exhibition. Over the following days the family visited Remplin, Mirow where they visited the family crypt in the Church of St John and the “Animals and humans, Sculptures from 1900 to the present” exhibition at the Palace Church in Neustrelitz.
In Neustrelitz on Thursday 18th June the Grand Ducal Family participated in an event marking the 200th anniversary of the first dental exam (23 October 1815) in Mecklenburg-Strelitz which was also attended by descendants of Louis Jacoby-Wolffson the state’s first dentist and the Grand Ducal Court dentist from 1826. On Friday the Duke, the Duchess and Duke Michael met with members of the state government in Schwerin.
With the departure of other members of the Grand Ducal Family starting on Sunday 22nd June the Hereditary Prince accompanied by Dr Rajko Lippert, the chairman of the Cultural Heritage of Mecklenburg-Strelitz society, started a 200th anniversary tour of Mecklenburg with visits to Stargard, Neubrandenburg, Waren, Neustrelitz, Schwerin and Güstrow. The Hereditary Prince and Dr Lippert also visited Berlin.
