Duke Michael at the groundbreaking ceremony

On 1 September His Highness Duke Michael represented the Grand Ducal House at the ceremony to mark the start of the restoration work on the family crypt in the Church of St John in Mirow.

Joining Duke Michael at the symbolic groundbreaking ceremony to signify the start of the work was, Uta-Maria Kuder the Justice Minister for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern,  Vincent Kokert leader of the CDU Party in the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Parliament, Pastor Christian Brodowski of the Church of St John and Karlo Schmettau the Mayor of Mirow.

Speaking during the ceremony Duke Michael expressed the view that “This day has a special meaning for us” and although the younger generation of the Grand Ducal House grew up away from Mecklenburg-Strelitz they “feel more and more that here are our roots and our home”.

The Justice Minister Uta-Maria Kuder declared about the work “The respect and appreciation of ecclesiastical tombs must be supported” and that “history is important to preserve. With the history of the Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, it is also a history that has shaped our country.”
