Baptism of Duke Leopold

The baptism of His Highness Duke Georg Leopold Borwin took place at the Church of Our Saviour, in The Hague, on Saturday 13 April 2024.

The baptism service was conducted by Father Sjaak de Boer, who had co-officiated at the religious wedding of Duke Leopold’s parents, Duke Alexander and Duchess Hande.

In addition to Duke Alexander and Duchess Hande, amongst the guests present at the baptism service were both sets of Duke Leopold’s grandparents, the Duke and Duchess of Mecklenburg and Suphi and Cemile Macit, as well as Duke Leopold’s aunt Duchess Olga and uncles Duke Michael and Kerem Macit.

Duke Leopold’s godparents are:

  • Marianna Harmsen, born Countess von und zu Westerholt und Gysenberg, the daughter in law of Duchess Irene
  • Laura van Lankeren, a friend of Duke Alexander and Duchess Hande
  • Baron Constantin von Reitzenstein, the son in law of Duchess Marie Katharina
  • Baron Gaudenz von Kripp zu Prunberg und Krippach, a cousin of the Grand Ducal Family via their shared descent from Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria

Duke Leopold’s baptism marked the second time that the baptism service of a duke or duchess of Mecklenburg had taken place in The Hague. The first was that of the late Queen Juliana of the Netherlands, who was a duchess of Mecklenburg via her father Duke Heinrich of Mecklenburg, who himself was a godfather of Duke Leopold’s great grand uncle Duke Carl Gregor. Queen Juliana’s baptism took place at Willemskerk on 5 June 1909.
