New memorial to Duchess Helene

The Duke of Mecklenburg today attended the inauguration ceremony of a new memorial in Birgter Feld, the site of the 7 July 1962 plane crash which claimed the lives of the Duke’s aunt Duchess Helene and pilot Hans Tinnefeld.

The new memorial dedicated to Duchess Helene and Hans Tinnefeld replaces the previous badly weathered wooden memorial cross. At the end of the ceremony the new memorial was blessed by local Saerbeck pastors, Ramesh Chopparapu of the Roman Catholic Church and Rainer Schröder of the Evangelical Church.

The ceremony was attended by around 100 friends and members of the local heritage associations for Saerbeck and Riesenbeck, the mayor of Saerbeck and a representative of the Luftsportfreunde Wesel which had been co-founded by Hans Tinnefeld.

In his speech the Duke thanked the Saerbeck and Riesenbeck heritage associations for the new memorial to his aunt and Hans Tinnefeld.
