Annual memorial service in Mirow

The 19th annual memorial service for deceased members of the House of Mecklenburg-Strelitz was held on the Mirow Palace Island at 2pm on Saturday 23 August in the Church of St John which houses the family crypt.

The special focus of this year’s service was on the 100th anniversaries this year of the death of Grand Duke Adolf Friedrich V (pictured) and the start of the First World War.

The service was led by the retired Roman Catholic pastor Bernhard Szymanski. Among those present was Dr Rajko Lippert, spokesman for the House of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and chairman of the Mecklenburg-Strelitz Cultural Heritage Society and Karlo Schmettau the mayor of Mirow.

The memorial is service is held every year on the penultimate Saturday of August and is open to all members of the public. Next year’s service will take place on Saturday 22 August.
